Sometimes articles diff/source display "blank" areas like these:

My guess is that this is caused by the HTML code for images?
Regardless of the cause, there should not be such gaps in the "Compare revisions" view, so I agree that this is a legitimate issue that should be addressed at the source (in the code of the feature?).
