Bug 1325014 changed the containers functionality such that all related tab behaviour opened within the same container. For experimentation and also for user choice I would like to allow this to be disabled by a preference. See discussion here: https://github.com/mozilla/testpilot-containers/issues/434 As you can see, neither solution is perfect however letting extensions have control over this would allow us to consider changing this is certain circumstances.
Making this a P5 for now. If there's more community demand via the github issue [1] that Jonathan mentioned above, we can turn this into a P3. [1] https://github.com/mozilla/testpilot-containers/issues/434
