Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/57.0.2987.133 Safari/537.36 Steps to reproduce: Help, about Firefox, clicking "Update to 53.0". More info: - I have Firefox 52.0.2 (64 bits) in Windows 10 but I also had the same problem with prior updates (50, 51, I dont remember since wich version). So I had to update from website's installer. - I also have one laptop with Windows 7 and Firefox 52.0.2 (64 bits) that updated with no problem. Actual results: I have done some research with no luck, so I will try to explain what is happen (but I can't fix it wihout using the web installer): 1) First of all, I don't have this folder: C:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Local\Mozilla\updates 2) After clicking "Update to 53.0" this folder is created: C:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Local\Mozilla\updates\308046B0AF4A39CB It contains the file updates\308046B0AF4A39CB\updates\0\update.status saying: pending 3) I click in "Restart Firefox in order to update" (I'm translating from Spanish, maybe says something different). 4) Firefox automatically restarts but I cannot see it as "Application" in W10 Task manager but as "Background Process" (2,6MB, 0% CPU/disk/network usage). At this point, update.status file is saying: applying. 5) I can wait 5 min with no response from Firefox.exe process. 6) If I try to open again Firefox.exe it creates another background process, with any Firefox's windows anywhere. 7) I have to kill first process (and automatically kills the 2nd one) and click again Firefox icon in order to see a Firefox's window... 52.0.2 version, of course. I did this process like 10 times or more, and sometimes I saw this folder with the update: C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\updated But at the moment I don't se the folder, I don't know when it was created in my previous tests. Also, Windows 10's username has a written accent, can this cause a problem? I had problems before with some applications but I'm not sure if this is the case... I canno't see any error in the logs: C:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Local\Mozilla\updates\308046B0AF4A39CB\updates\0\update.log Expected results: Firefox should be restarted with the 53.0 version.
Robert, could you check the issue of the reporter who provided some useful details.

This sounds a lot like the symptoms of bug 1356637. Do you happen to be running some audio software called Nahimic? If so, try exiting it (and all running Firefox processes) and then try to update again.
Flags: needinfo?(robert.strong.bugs)
Yeah, that was the problem. I have a MSI Motherboard (Z170A M7), and had Nahimic v1 since 1-2 year ago. With version 1 I noticed that, instead the Nahimic's main application (GUI, sintetizer, whatever), the cause of the problem was this file: "C:\Program Files\Nahimic\Nahimic VR\Foundation\x64\NahimicVRSvc64.exe", version 1.0.7.41234 I mean, even exiting Nahimic application I couldn't update Firefox. Killing NahimicVRSvc64.exe was the solution (for Nahimic v1). With Nahimic v2 (now I don't have any NahimicVR process), I think the problem was solved once I killed the Nahimic's main application. Anyway, I just uninstalled Nahimic, I didn't need it. Thanks for your help!
