str: open a test case with a simple text area, type some text, double tab a word to select it. 

result: a blue dot shows up at the cursor position, no selection occurs

I think better control over text selection in editable fields is covered by bug 1300723, although it doesn't mention this scenario specifically. I don't think it's a regression per se. You should still be able to select text by long-pressing in the field.
