In Netscape 4.x, the JVM was built in to the browser. Thus, this bug did not occur. In Mozilla, the JVM is a plug-in. On many intranets and other sites, the browser must authenticate to download the applet. Once downloaded, the JVM must authenticate itself. To do this, it uses its own HTTP implementation. Currently, Mozilla does not tell the JVM plug-in how to authenticate. Thus, the user is required to login twice. To avoid the need to login twice, we need an API to provide our authentication result to the Java plugin. See bug 60304 comment 51 for a better description. This is not a duplicate of 60304. That bug is owned by a sun.com developer. This is a Mozilla bug. To fix it, we need a new API. Because it's a new API, we need it for 1.0. Setting this bug to block 60304.
This new bug asks that Mozilla provide a new API to provide a Java applet with authentication information. This is needed for Mozilla 1.0.

Wouldn't this be better handled by writing protocol handlers that use the browser's network stack as suggested by bug #135840?
