In https://github.com/w3c/csswg-drafts/issues/478 the CSS WG resolved that when a spanning cell has *some* of its rows or columns visibility:collapse (but not the first, which makes it go away), then it should paint whichever of its contents fit in the area provided, but otherwise automatically clip to the border box.
