Description

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; rv:50.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/50.0
Build ID: 20100101

Steps to reproduce:

Quoting the user in https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1170884 :

I open a page with flash video, it freezes and crashes if I leave it open too long. It freezes if I switch to another page. And It freezes if I interact with the video. Basically, if I do anything with a page with flash video page, the tab it's on crashes.

Actual results:

The tab crashes with "Gah. Your tab just crashed" and we get the following crash reports:

https://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report/index/bp-e0ebe04d-45f5-484f-aa35-edded0170811
https://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report/index/bp-b0708b67-7490-4f90-a1b4-cdc1c0170811
https://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report/index/bp-0cde1b16-50b5-475a-810b-79b7f0170811

Expected results:

It should continue to play the video in the background or foreground without crashing.
What's about the pages and verify of the bug?

I am quoting the user:
> It's not any specific page that's causing the crashes to trigger.
> Both Youtube videos and wiki articles with ads trigger the page to crash.
> Strangely enough, flash games with ads don't trigger it.
Thanks for you answer!

AFAIK, it's really difficult to investigate the bug, if there are no clear steps to reproduce...

The first and the last crash report have the signature [@ IPCError-browser | ShutDownKill ].
[@ IPCError-browser | ShutDownKill ] normally happens only if you shut down your browser and so I think they don't belong to the flash problem the user have while browsing...

Maybe you can invite the user to participate to this bug report...
...and he can deliver better steps to reproduce and/or better crash signatures.

I am experiencing this same problem. It happens whenever I open YouTube and start to watch any video. It also happens when watching video on the BBC website.

The problem is strange and lack consistency. Loading any video will eventually crash the tab I am on. If I choose to advance the video with my mouse FF hangs and eventually crashes.

While recreating this error in a seperate FF window - it also crashed the tab I am on to add this to this bug report.

Probably noto very helpful.

I have:

Unimstalled and reinstalled FF.
Upgrade to latest graphiocs drivers.
Disabled all add-ons.

I am running

Windows 10 Enterprise Version 1703 (OS Build 15063.540)

Thanks
Scott, please enter after a crash 'about:crashes' into the URL Bar and press enter.
You get a page with crash reports.
Search for the crash (submitted or not) with the latest date.
If the crash is not submitted, submit him with a click on it and wait till the crash report page opens.
Then paste the URL in this bug.
You should verify that all crashes (that happens this way) have on top the same crash signature.
Maybe, if you be not sure, you make some comments here with the latest crash report every time a crash happens - so we can verify that all reports have the same signature.
Thx in advance!

The user just replied that their problem got solved after upgrading flash. So please close the bug if it is unnecessary.
Would be my next suggestion for Scott to check the version of flash...
Let's wait if Scott's problem get fixed this way, too.

Having the same issue. Able to reliably recreate the problem by going to any Youtube video and skipping a bit. It is also not generating a crash report every time.

Latest report and only one today even after about 10 crashes: bp-f2d4b33b-4124-43c3-bd9d-f77f90170827

Updated Flash as we as any relevant program and driver I could think of. Still no change. Still crashing
Crash Signature: [@ RtlFreeHeap | CoTaskMemFree ]

I have subsequently updated Flash and this has been no help - still crashing under the same circumstances as listed earlier. Similar to the other listings here.

Thanks

Scott
The new crash report has nothing graphics related inside it. And the first crash report also looks like not 'really' a graphics issue. It almost appears as if somehow Flash is corrupting something here but that shouldn't be possible. In any case I'm moving this out of graphics as there's no evidence of it being related and it seems unhelpful to have it there.

Note that the 'crash signature' is likely random so we shouldn't rely on that too much. Obviously considering the amount of reports this is a real problem though and it should not be lost.

Bas, I can't see a question for me, so I remove the 'needinfo'.

Haven't marked this bug as 'New' till now, because I can't see 'steps to reproduce' and also no clear 'crash signature' that can be investigated. Used [@ RtlFreeHeap | CoTaskMemFree ] for now, because it was the only one submitted, till now.

Jim - can you take a quick look (or have someone from your team look) and see if there's anything actionable here?

Unfortunately these are all forced child process shutdown reports. Likely not involved at all.

Youtube doesn't use flash usually. Do you have any crash reports from this in your about:support?

Can't move this to another component, not sure where it would go. We need a valid crash report for this issue, so far we don't have one.

As Jim said above, we need a valid crash report related to the videos being played to diagnose this. Closing incomplete, but feel free to reopen if you have a crash report in about:support.
