User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; Win64; x64; rv:55.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/55.0 Build ID: 20170814072924 Steps to reproduce: I load the webpage https://www.wunderground.com/weather/us/tx/sugar-land-municipal-hull . This is on a Windows 7 x64 pc with 16 GB of ram. The only add-on that I am running is "Autofill Forms". Actual results: The webpage loads. My memory usage starts going up. In the 32 bit version, FireFox will crash when the memory usage hits 3 GB of ram after a couple of hours. In the 64 bit version, FireFox will become lethargic when memory usage hits 8 GB of ram after a couple of hours. Expected results: Memory usage should stay at 1.0 to 1.5 GB of ram on the 64 bit version of FireFox. If I load an ad blocker then the memory runaway problem does not happen.
Does a similar memory issue happen with other browsers? Does it happen if you disable the "Autofill Forms" add-on? If the answer to the first is "no" and the second is "yes" (ie the add-on doesn't make a difference), can you get a memory report from before and after a significant increase in usage (say, 500mb - no need to wait until the browser crashes and/or becomes lethargic) via about:memory ? The memory runaway problem also happens on the 32 bit version 11 of Internet Explorer. The memory usage on IE11 with https://www.wunderground.com/weather/us/tx/sugar-land-municipal-hull went from 250 MB initially to 940 MB after three hours.

Hm, I guess that's still a lot less than the 8gb in comment #0. Can you get some memory reports using the info in comment #1 ? Does the memory usage go away after closing the tab?

I note that clicking the "Measure" button on about:memory reports on the current memory in usage. Then, FF appears to run a GC (garbage collection) as the memory used suddenly dropped by 300 MB. A subsequent memory usage drops the memory usage another 300 MB so that the memory in usage is back to 450 MB. It appears that the memory leakage is temporary and is related to web pages automatically refreshing themselves. In my opinion, FireFox needs to know when a page automatically refreshes itself. After a webpage refreshes itself, FireFox needs to run a GC. Maybe twice.
:mccr8, do you think there's anything we can improve about the situation here given the last few comments (or can you redirect to someone who would know? I don't know enough about GC / the DOM to really comment much.

It sounds like the GC isn't running until the memory reporter somehow kicks up enough activity. Jon, could you maybe see if there's something going wrong on the GC side?

OK, I'm trying the locally. Some observations: - memory fluctuates but has risen slowly up to 650MiB after ~3 hours - GC *is* happening periodically on the main thread - the page is making loads of network requests (one every few seconds)
Several hours later and memory use is 690MiB, so I'm not observing this run away memory use. It may be a specific advert that is causing the problem and that I'm not being served that one.

If you using the about:memory function in FireFox, my observation is that the entire program is garbage collected at the completion of every "Measure" button click event. Kind of a Heisenberg Uncertainty Principal thing. You need to use an external tool such as Windows Task Manager to see how much actual memory is being used by FireFox in this specific case. > Does the memory usage go away after closing the tab? I let https://www.wunderground.com/weather/us/tx/sugar-land-municipal-hull run for about three hours today. There where several other tabs in use also. My memory usage according to Windows Task Manager (WTM) was 1.5 GB. I dismissed the wundergound tab. The memory usage only dropped 100 MB to 1.4 GB (WTM). I dismissed the other tabs. The memory usage dropped to 1.0 GB (WTM). The tab left was my default website, http://drudgereport.com/ . I then started another tab and opened up about:memory. I ran several GC and CC events. No appreciable memory change (1.0 GB according to WTM). I then clicked on the Measure button. It showed 600 MB of usage (a 400 MB discrepancy with WTM). I am perplexed. This looks more like a resource leak which is incidentally leaking memory. But, who knows ?

I was using a brand new profile (created for this test) using Firefox Nightly 57.0a1 (2017-08-29) (64-bit) Build 20170829100404 under Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 (64-bit). In my case, the URL I used was https://www.wunderground.com/weather/us/or/salem/97305 Some runs went with normal activity. Some runs climbed in working set memory and private memory for the content process; on two of the runs that I allowed to run for a while the private memory climbed to 1G! (Thank you for the process number when mouse hovers over the tab!) When grabbing more and more private memory, I noticed the CPU fan was running, CPU usage was in the neighborhood of 25-50% (4 cores so 50% means the equivalent of two cores going full bore), and the Plug-in icon was in the toolbar (waiting for me to enable Flash; I do have Adobe Flash Player 26 NPAPI version 26.0.0.151 installed on my system). The inconsistent runs would be consistent with one or more advertisements having (or triggering) an issue and why the reporter didn't experience problems when using an ad blocker (mentioned at end of Comment 0). I don't know if it would be useful, but I ended up installing the Gecko Profiler and turned it on briefly while memory was being grabbed (and CPU high, and CPU fan running, and waiting for Flash to be enabled), and I saved it to: http://bit.ly/2wHV9M8 Speculation: Is there a bug when the page requests Flash and the user doesn't respond to the request in a timely manner? From a quick look, this shows hangs in cycle collection and in running scripts for https://static.cliipa.com/basev/1.0.88/sbt.js and other content scripts (in content process #3). The rest of the processes seem to spend (almost) all of their time waiting... which corroborates there being a "bad ad" here or something like that, causing the slowness. That said, I don't know that the ad that is slow here corresponds to the ad causing the runaway memory usage, given that once things are in a bad state, other ads might also be slow... maybe :jonco can shed more light on this and/or anything else that may be helpful here.
