According to the devs of PocketCasts this is a bug with the browser itself See: https://www.reddit.com/r/pocketcasts/comments/6x746g/webplayer_distortion_on_firefox/ The variable speed stuff is actually done inside the browser itself. To my knowledge only Chrome ships with a plugin that does voices nicely, Safari and Firefox are optimised for music...which is odd because how many people do you know that speed up music?
I believe Edge speeds things up just fine too. This is the same problem that Firefox has with speeding up video, by the way. I'm also really looking forward to a fix!
