User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:57.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/57.0
Build ID: 20170902100317
Steps to reproduce:
This bug is fixable by changing your settings. However, I have recently seen that Firefox (Nightly) has been integrated into the Gmail app and believe this should happen for the Google search app. For the sake of clarity, I will list steps and results.
1. Open the Google app
2. Open the Menu (Three Lines, top left corner) > Settings > Accounts & privacy and turn on Open web pages in the Google app
3. Return to the Google app main page, search for anything, and tap go.
4. Tap on one of the results.
Actual results:
The link is opened in Chrome Custom Tabs, a simplified version of Chrome that appears to be in the app you opened the link from.
Expected results:
The link should have been opened in some form of Firefox/Nightly.
To fix this, you simply turn off the 'Open web pages in Google app' setting I talked about earlier, but the link is opened in the regular Firefox or Nightly app. Instead, the app should open in a 'Powered by Firefox/Nightly' in-app experience similar to clicking a link in Gmail on the latest release of Nightly. This is faster, simpler, more compatible with Android and Google, and improves Firefox-Chrome parity.
(Note: The in-app experience I refer to may be called GeckoView. I am not sure. If you know what I am talking about and know that the component for this bug should be changed to GeckoView or something else, go ahead and do it or comment on this bug.)
[triage] fwiw, I think this has to be filed against the Google app – I think we're doing everything we can here, considering this works properly in Chrome, but I'd have to check the code to be sure.
