On my iPhone SE it takes what feels like 2 seconds for a tab to close (either swiping to the left or pressing the x).

I realised it's just the last remaining open tab that takes forever. Maybe something to do with the equivalent of about:newtab?

My bad. I thought you were testing on the Beta channel :-)

Typically, users can sign up for access to TestFlight betas here:
https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/ios/testflight

However, there's usually a few days latency between signing up there and receiving access. We've gone ahead and directly added you to TestFlight. You should receive an email with further instructions to get a beta build on your device.
