It's not reproducing on Nexus 6P (Android 8) or Pixel C (Android 7) and I don't have a Nexus 6.
Looking at the logs, it looks like we fail because of missing RECORD_AUDIO permission.
Bogdan, can you please verify this by setting the permission manually (App Info / App permissions / Microphone).

I've set all of the permissions manually for the Nexus 6 but still got the same result.

Thanks Bogdan!
Can we verify this on a different Nexus 6 device, ideally with a different Android version?
Does it work on Chrome?
Is it a regression and can we got a window for that?

I am sorry but I have no other Nexus 6 device, tried it on a 6P and it worked fine. The problem seems to persist on Chrome as well, sorry for not testing that earlier.

I did a factory reset for the Nexus 6 device, everything seems to be working fine now. I can't figure out exactly what caused this problem since no other 3rd party apps were installed that could have influenced audio output. Closing this because no other devices were affected by the issue and I can no longer reproduce it on the Nexus 6.
