Filing this as a followup to bug 1379332.  We have several hackarounds for that bug in our frontend code, which we can remove once it's fixed.

The Gecko assertion was fixed in bug 1379332.

I just landed bug 1379332 on Autoland, and I'll land this fix later on today or tomorrow (just for an abundance of caution, to avoid causing extra trouble in the unlikely event that bug 1379332 gets backed out).
