Steps to reproduce:
The Devtools don't show the CSS Grid Overlay. For example on this https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/developer/css-grid/ page. Also clicking the grid icon on the Display: Grid property doesn't work. This is on Mac FF 56 and FF Dev Ed 57.
Actual results:
Doesn't show.. and in console multiple lines:
Unexpected value NaN parsing y1 attribute.

Expected results:
The grid overlay should be superimposed over the grid element.
Component: Untriaged → Developer Tools: Inspector
:gl, maybe you have some ideas to troubleshoot this? I can't seem reproduce the issue here.

I would like to add that the problem seems a compositing issue? When I fiddle with the Grid settings toggles, sometimes the overlay appears. However when I then switch to another tab and back, the overlay is gone. Also of note might be that the mouseover on the small grid representation is laggy, it takes half a second or so for the display to highlight the appropriate area. The overlay may also appear intermittently when mousing over the small grid.
The console doesn't show the NaN values anymore, no clue why.
I noticed this issue today too. Note the grid-template-columns property, I'd accidentally inverted the values:

Same issue, no grid overlay in both Firefox browsers:
Firefox Developer 59.0b2

The fix that worked for me: In Firefox Developer Edition, go to Preferences > Performance, uncheck both "Use recommended performance settings" & "Use hardware acceleration when available".

peterfrancismurphy, could you go to about:support, copy the info there to a file, and then attach it to this bug? Ideally it would be best if you can do this process twice for these modes:
1. the current, working mode
2. the default mode (where the performance checkboxes are checked)
It sounds like there is some graphics issue in default mode on your machine, so I'd like to see if we can identify what that is.

This problem has come up quite many times on Wes Bos' CSS Grid course Slack channel, and people there said that turning off the prefs mentioned in comment 6 worked.

Milan, it looks like for some users (potentially those with Intel GPUs and accelerated graphics enabled) aren't able to see the DevTools grid highlighter on the page. At the moment, affected users are disabling accelerated graphics as a workaround. Could you have someone on the Graphics team take a look?
This is a high priority feature for Firefox DevTools, so it would be wonderful if we can find out what's wrong here. The grid highlighter is a transparent canvas[1] that is drawn on top of the page content. I am happy to help navigate DevTools code as needed so we can find a fix for this.

Using mozregression to find when this stopped working would be really beneficial.
In the meantime, could somebody that can reproduce this, set gfx.canvas.azure.accelerated to false in about:config, restart the browser, and try again?

1. Reset the performance checkboxes to default state
2. In about:config, search for `gfx.canvas.azure.accelerated` and toggle to false
3. Restart Firefox and try again
As for mozregression, anyone who can reproduce the issue is welcome to give that a try. There's a guide[1] to try it out if you've never used it before. It's possible the grid highlighter has been affected since it first appeared, but so far we don't know for sure.

Marking this as New instead of Unconfirmed, because quite a few people have been reporting this issue lately.
Also, marking as P1 since this basically breaks the entire tool.
What is the next step to make progress here? I'd love to provide a regression range (if any), but I've not been able to reproduce on any of my available computers so far.
If anyone can reproduce this and is ready to spend some time running the mozregression tool, that would be awesome!

Have the same issue, also on a MB Pro late 2011 15". Wanted to confirm that the suggestion in <a href="show_bug.cgi?id=1412419#c12">comment 12</a> worked. I'd be willing to test on mozregression except I'm not sure how to install it on a Mac. Got an error when I tried installing pip so apparently I need more instructions.

The fix that worked for me: In Firefox Developer Edition, go to Preferences > Performance, uncheck both "Use recommended performance settings" & "Use hardware acceleration when available".

I have attempted to perform a mozregression for this issue. However, it seems that builds from the regression area are missing and the mozregression procedure cannot be finished.
I have attached the log just above this comment.
I have 2 thoughts:
1. It is possible that I could tag some of the bad builds incorrectly (as good) because the results are not seen instantly.
A more accurate test case could probably help. This is the test case I used:
- Open browser, open Browser's Console, open test page from comment 0.
- Right click on the grid objects.
- Select a "grid-container" class element from the Inspector area.
- From the panel to the right, click on the icon in the shape of a grid ("Click to toggle the CSS grid highlighter").
- Then I would scroll the inspector tab, click on the grid related elements and expect to see the errors in the Console.
2. I could try to perform the mozregression on another OS, hoping that the needed build would not be missing, but the only one I could reproduce it on was Ubuntu18, on which the mozregression tool could not be installed. I WIL try on other systems with Ubuntu 18 tomorrow.
3. I hope that the log could be of some help.

I have tried to perform the mozregression on Ubuntu 16. The same problem occurs:
"There are no build artifacts on inbound for these changesets (they are probably too old)."
Automated regression (using the mozregression tool) cannot be performed.
