:gkw, at least, would like have the symbols packaged and uploaded, so that these shells can be downloaded and used, and crashes can have their symbols looked up.

That's separate, I think. Fixing that bug is unlikely to fix this one, and vice versa. autospider.py needs to call the right thing to package up the symbols, and bug 1351559 is for the browser builds so does not run autospider.py at all.

Or said otherwise, autospider.py needs to call the stuff that the browser builds already call, to package up symbols for everything, it's just that "everything" in this case will only be the JS shell symbols.
