What was your search provider? Did you set it manually?

Thank you for filing this bug.
57.0.1 has a Search Reset feature, it is done to protect the user, not to force anything specifically (it suggests google just because it's the default search provider in your region).
If the feature thinks you may have set the engine, it asks you for confirmation and it's a one-click action to retain your choice.

"Notice for Firefox users:
Firefox's latest update (57.0.01) tries to reset your default search engine. After the update you can easily reset StartPage as your default search engine."
StartPage now bears the aforementioned warning. It suggests a reset, rather than a prompt. They've never pushed their search engine via unscrupulous means like hijacking add-ons. The detection needs more work if it can't tell this aboveboard privacy-friendly engine was added by user action.
