if i have one table with witdth="100%" and a table that's align="right" next to
it, i shouldn't have to put a br clear="all" in to prevent the aligned table
from appearing next to the 100% width table. by definition, width="100%" should
mean that it takes up all available space and there's no room for another table
next to it
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. appears in any page with an overall body table with a pixel width containing
a table with width="100%" and another table with align="left" or "right" attributes.

Even then, however, there was a contrary voice, identified with a different
school of Zionism, cultural Zionism, that functioned as a sort of corrective to
political Zionism. The movement was led by the "father of cultural Zionism,"
whose given name was Asher Ginsberg but who took the name <a href="#"
class="keyfigureslink" onclick="keyFigures('haam');return false;">Ahad Ha'am</a>
(One of the people). He was also an interesting figure and an intellectual of
much more depth than <a href="#" class="keyfigureslink"
onclick="keyFigures('herzl');return false;">Herzl</a>. Ha'am delivered some
rather acerbic attacks on Herzl, the bases for which prove revealing.

He felt that the secular vision and the notion that the Jews should be a people
like any other was offensive. Herzl was trying to work out the identity crisis
by saying, OK, we can't be accepted, so let us be a normal people instead and
live in a place where we have political rights. For Ha'am, this was a real
travesty of the essence of Judaism, which, for him, was its cultural content.</p>

in his essay "On Nationalism and Religion" (1910) where he wrote: "If it is
impossible to be a Jew in the religious sense without acknowledging our
nationality, it is possible to be a Jew in the national sense without accepting

I think this is a very neat way of saying that Judaism traditionally has both
national and religious dimensions. People have some degree of choice in how they
see themselves as Jews, and there can certainly be a national sense of
spiritually identifying as a Jew without traditional religion. That was the
choice that Ha'am made: to abandon traditional orthodox religion, even though he
also said you can't be a religious Jew without being a nationalist.

What I think is important for us to take away from this is that, wrestling with
the issue at a formative stage, Ha'am was trying to figure out where the idea of
a national home fit in with trying to work out these identity issues. He then
moved on to say the most important thing, that Palestine would be a spiritual
center and that this spiritual center would transform the life of Jews all over,
as they either gained new rights where they were or were pushed by anti-Semitism
into going to the national home. In his essay "The Negation of the Diaspora"
(1909), he asked, What about the spiritual center that would be important? He
decided that it would be "a fixed center for our national life in the land of
its birth." And, in so being, it would "exert a 'pull' on all of them [Jews],
and so transform the scattered atoms into a single entity with a definite and
self-subsistent character of its own."

The other interesting thing about <a href="#" class="keyfigureslink"
onclick="keyFigures('haam');return false;">Ahad Ha'am</a> was how far ahead of
his time he was in anticipating a conflict with local Arab nationalism. This is
a theme I think we need to look when considering all of the early Zionist
thinkers. To what extent were they aware of the Arab majority community? To what
extent were they sensitive to the possibility that there would be some clash? In
"Truth from the Land of Israel," an article he wrote in 1891, when he was
visiting Israel and some of the early settlers there, Ha'am pointed out that,
although local Arabs were not protesting against the presence of the Jews, that
did not mean they weren't noticing. "The Arabs . . . understand very well what
we want and what we do in the country; but they behave as if they do not notice
it because at present they do not see any danger. . . The day will come in which
the life of our people in the Land of Israel will develop to such a degree that
they will push aside the local population." There will be a clash. And there
will be an emerging Arab nationalism and it's important to anticipate this and
important to take heed of it. That was an important thought coming out of the
father of cultural Zionism.
