Steps to reproduce:
Visit a site with a web font not currently installed on the system.
Actual results:
Web font and symbols take a considerable amount of time to populate on the page.
(See source code for a site I tested on my machine as an example attached to this bug.)
Expected results:
Page loading should be much smoother, faster, and seamless as promised for Firefox Quantum.
Even over a high-speed connection, web fonts seem to take far too long to download for websites in which the default font is not installed on the drive of my system.
Example site with issue on my system: 'https://www.kraken.com/'
Basic font family information, extracted from CSS: 'font-family:sans-serif'

I have tried to reproduce this issue on Ubuntu 14.04 x64, Ubuntu 16.04 x64 and Ubuntu 17.01 x64, with Firefox release (57.0.3) and the latest Nightly (59.0a1) build.
I have verified that I do not have the necessary fonts installed, navigated to the provided URL and I haven't experienced any lag or render problems. The only problem that I've observed was that the website loads very slowly.
Could you please confirm if that is the same behavior that you have encountered?
Also, can you please retest this issue using a new clean Firefox profile, maybe even safe mode, to eliminate custom settings as a possible cause (https://goo.gl/AR5o9d)?
