Pasting of bookmarks works thanks to the fix of bug 129428, but there are still
issues that lead to data lost as copy does not work as expected:
copy/cut a bookmark, paste it somewhere else (= in another folder): works (with
keyboard, with edit menu, with right-click)
do the same with a folder:
copy-paste does nothing
cut-paste is equal to delete = loss of data
I think the paste actually works and the copy/cut is broken, so it's NOT bug
129428, because if you paste in a text editor, you get the string "null".
sorry, I forgot to mention system info in the bug report:
Windows NT 4 sp5, Mozilla nightly, build id 2002050706
Would this be related to bug #51683? It would explain why copy/paste doesn't
work. But cu/paste should work...

Severity: normal → critical
Shill,
I don't think so, for hte 2 following reasons:
1- This would only be a problem for copy/paste, not for cut/paste When you cut
paste, you never obtain 2 equivalent folders
2- I actually have many duplicated bookmarks folders (in my personnal toolbar),
but I admit it's hard to obtain. The way I have them is to import the bookmark
file in the bookmarks, then remove the ones I don't want...
3- I can have duplicated bookmarks, so the bug you mention seems to be WFM
(works for me)
But yes, I suspect than all these many bookmarks bugs are related. Heck! Mozilla
bookmarks is really a big piece of **** (sorry to be uncorrect). It's been a
problem for months. A big pain in the ****. A reason for stress ("OH!, I've
AGAIN lost 100Kb of bookmarks :)" "What are these separators doing here by
dozens!" etc.)

This is working for me when I use the right-click to cut and paste. It also
works with Ctrl-X, Ctrl-V. Don't use copy because of bug 51683. Can you try this
again in RC2?
I can't get shift-del shift-ins to work. That would be a different bug.
well, rc2 and 2002051008 have working copy of folders.... but...
WHY ARE ALL THE DUPLICATED SEPARATORS COMING BACK AGAIN IN MY BOOKMARKS!
I'm fed up. History of bugs in Mozilla is always the same! I've been using it
every day for a year now (well, even more), and I'm now really fed up with the
bugs going and coming back, again and again! My bookmarks are 300Kb, well
organized and classified. I'm fed up with spending hours to track these
separators in them. I'm fed up with Mozilla. Gecko is a wonderful piece of
software. So are K-meleon, Galeon and other Gecko based browsers. But bugs are
never corrected in Mozilla! They go, and come back after a few months.
I've created an attachment.
Olivier, upset to have its bookmarks trashed AGAIN.
Here are the conditions to have a separator spontaneous generation:
have some separators in some folders,
copy and paste the folders somewhere else.
result: in all the subfolders of the copied folder (the original and the copy),
all the subfolders that had separators have many many separators added at the
end of a folder, usually this number being related to
a) the number of original separators
b) the time of use (maybe number of times started) of Mozilla
As an example, a folder that had 2 separators, 11 bookmarks, 3 subfolders had
510 supplementary separators after a few hours of use (yes it's not a typo: 510
added separators).
This bug is a regression. I have seen it for a long time, but this was "solved*"
a few months ago (1-2 months).
* solved the Mozilla ways = hidden under the carpet, not corrected. I guess it
was solved by disableing the "copy folder" function. Once re-enabled this
function, well the bug reappears.
But I guess I should do and specific bug report for this issue, and this
specific bug 142986 should be closed.
Workaround : don't allow/disable/delete separators in the bookmarks

Oliv, I agree that current bookmarks suck.
Could you please close this bug as WFM and open a new bug for the separator issue?
With 100% reproducible testcase. CC' me, I will investigate it.
I've opened bug 144992. How do I close bug 142986 now?
