Currently there is a label field that allows the email to be assigned to one of a few nonoverlapping categories. Real life is a bit more complicated, so this should be replaced or extended by a field that allows to assign to each mail one or more of an arbitrarily long list of classifications or keywords - i.e. an email could be "work", "important", and "projectA" at the same time. IMO opinion if this was done well it could completely replace the current label-scheme. Each classification could optionally be associated with a formatting scheme that defines the colour or type of font, or shows a small icon (e.g. explamation mark, question mark, smileys etc) in the list. (with a simple scheme to resolve conflicts when more than one classification is attached to an email, e.g. always take attributes from the first in the list).

Outlook (which has been my mail client of choice until recently) supports both named flags which correlates to the existing label infrastructure and is useful for quickly highlighting messages into groups, and also categories which are not mutually exclusive and allow for useful search folders and sorting.
