User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:59.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/59.0 Build ID: 20180310025718 Steps to reproduce: I have an Intel HD Graphics 530. For more informations, see the attached file that displays my about:support. 1. Load a youtube video (with the following resolutions : 720p60 and/or 1080p60) 2. Check with "Advanced Statistics" that the video uses the VP9 codec 3. Monitor the CPU and temperature Actual results: The CPU percentage is around 60% constant and the temperature increases significantly (in fullscreen paticurlarly). Expected results: With h.264 codec, the CPU is around 30% or less with the same configuration than the STR.

Yeah, I can reproduce it(on Nightly): Build ID: 20180316100132 Platform/OS: Windows_NT 10.0 x64 URL to test on: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wK4QxezQyvw Although it decreases when it has buffered anything, it's still taking up to 50% on a rather bad laptop and many frames are being dropped.
Status: UNCONFIRMED → NEW
Ever confirmed: true
I can also reproduce it on Firefox 59.0.2 x64. Jens, do you know someone in the Mozilla staff that may works on this bug? Just to get this thing moving :) Thanks.
Flags: needinfo?(mozilla)
Nope, I'm just a volunteer. :/
Flags: needinfo?(mozilla)
H.264 is typically hardware-accelerated, and even in pure software implementations is lower-overhead than VP9. (VP8 is roughly similar to H.264, though rarely HW accelerated). Likely this is as-expected, though I don't know if HW acceleration for vp9 should be expected on the reporter's GPU/CPU.
Flags: needinfo?(jyavenard)
Priority: -- → P3
(In reply to Jens Hausdorf from comment #1) > Yeah, I can reproduce it(on Nightly): > > Build ID: 20180316100132 > Platform/OS: Windows_NT 10.0 x64 > > URL to test on: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wK4QxezQyvw > > Although it decreases when it has buffered anything, it's still taking up to > 50% on a rather bad laptop and many frames are being dropped. Please provide a copy of your about:support Did you force the preference media.mediasource.webm.enabled to true? The default is off, on slow machine, vp9 is disabled by default, and the threshold set to enable vp9 is pretty high. If you leave settings on default, you shouldn't be getting dropped frames. An Intel 530 can't do hardware decoding of vp9
Flags: needinfo?(jyavenard)
The machine score 157 in the vp9 benchmark, the threshold is 150 to enable vp9... Maybe we should bump that value. Vp9 will always be more cpu intensive than h264. With h264 however, youtube limits the content to 1080p max

Jens, I don't believe your problem is related to this bug. There's no reason why you should ever get VP9 with your machine (VP9 isn't enabled because its benchmarked speed is way too low: 23fps on 720p when we want a minimum of 150p).
Alright. Somehow it works better, am I supposed to file a new bug?
You have disabled webm support entirely (you've set media.webm.enabled to false), which means with YT you'll only ever get mp4 with h264 which is hardware accelerated. If you experience a new problem, then yes please.. open a new bug
You mentioned that the CPU usage was greater with VP9 than with H264, that is to be expected. However, you didn't mention playback quality. Is playback smooth in YouTube for you? if so, no need to change anything.

But, some videos have dropped frames sometimes.

thank you. did you compare with the CPU usage in Chrome for those same streams?

(In reply to Jean-Yves Avenard [:jya] from comment #13) > thank you. > > did you compare with the CPU usage in Chrome for those same streams? With the same stream, I have ~48% of CPU load for Firefox 60 and ~51% for Chromium 68 with the same codec. I think it is fixed.

Great to hear... this one also what I expected your answer to be, but wanted to be sure.

Hi, like I already said, I'm having cpu usage and I can hear the fans of my laptop turning faster when watching at 1080p60 videos on youtube with VP9 codec. The problem is that a few weeks/months ago, there was no problem with these videos and VP9, the cpu usage was way down. Why now I can see and hear high cpu usage? (a screenshot : http://ratm6.free.fr/captures_d'ecran/cpu_usage_with_vp9_youtube_1080p60.JPG) I think there is a firefox bug or youtube bug. Thanks.

Oops I forgot to say that I have an Intel HD graphics 4600 gpu.
20% CPU usage to do vp9 @ 60fps on a processor not support VP9 hardware decoding is very good. You can't expect lower with a video that requires software decoding. you can disable vp9 and use h264 if you want even lower cpu usage, but the video quality and network usage won't be as good.
