I believe this is a symptom of the old FreeType version installed on Ubuntu 16.04. I am intending to disable variation-font support on such old versions, because of issues like this and bug 1450057.
Because of this, could we move Linux testing to a newer distro? Or (perhaps simpler) install an updated FreeType library -- see http://ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/2017/06/install-freetype-2-8-in-ubuntu-16-04-17-04/.
I could not reproduce the issue on Ubuntu 16.04 x64 using the latest Nightly 61.0a1 with FreeType version 2.8.1.
I will close this bug as Resolved WFM.
