Aaron Andersen has stated on [newsgroup] that xulplanet.com can no longer take the strain of hosting themes, in message <3CE03651.8050705@yahoo.com> posted to netscape.public.mozilla.general and netscape.public.dev.skins . See http://groups.google.com/groups?as_umsgid=3CE03651.8050705%40yahoo.com%3E&lr=&hl=en . (a copy is at the end of this bug report.) Gerv, who is setting up http://mozilla.org/start/1.0/ , suggests that, for at least the 1.0 final release, it should point instead to http://mozilla.org/start/1.0/skins/ , as per the email below. So for 1.0 at least, it most likely needs to be pointed at that URL. From gerv@mozilla.org Fri May 17 21:57:18 2002 From: Gervase Markham <gerv@mozilla.org> To: "Red Drag Diva,(David Gerard),," <fun@velvet.net> Subject: Re: Stuff and Skins/splashes on deskmod.com? (was Splash Screens) Date: Fri, 17 May 2002 12:48:42 +0100 Organization: mozilla.org >They seem to have handed it off to deskmod.com, though - go to View-> >Apply Theme->Get New Themes and click the link on the xulplanet page it >takes you to. > >(Someone want to raise a bug to change the Get New Themes link? After >checking how deskmod are with it.) If Get New Themes currently links to the wrong place, it needs fixing. File an urgent bug, and find someone who knows our code processes to guide you through getting it done. If we don't have somewhere yet, change it to a location like http://www.mozilla.org/start/1.0/skins/ , and then we can set up a redirect. That might be best. Also, we need somewhere for our "skins" link to link. It's easiest if it goes directly to the internal site. Whichever site it is needs a "skins summary page", a bit like themes.org used to have. I'm away this weekend (inconvenient, I know.) People, please get on with what you are doing, and I'll try and pull things together sunday night. Gerv From: Aaron Andersen <kc7gza@yahoo.com> Newsgroups: netscape.public.mozilla.general,netscape.public.dev.skins Subject: Installing skins from a XPI Followup-To: netscape.public.mozilla.general Date: Mon, 13 May 2002 14:55:29 -0700 Organization: Another Netscape Collabra Server User Lines: 28 Message-ID: <3CE03651.8050705@yahoo.com> NNTP-Posting-Host: ACBE5B93.ipt.aol.com Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win98; en-US; rv:1.0rc1) Gecko/20020417 X-Accept-Language: en-us, en As some of you may know, I am trying to get out of the skin hosting buisness. XulPlanet went way over our bandwidth limit last month, and I am going to have to remove the mozilla skins sometime soon or we will do the same thing again this month. However, I'd rather not shut down the xulplanet download section until there is at least one other mozilla skin download site out there that people can get skins from. The problem is, it is very difficult to explain to the admins from other skin sites how to upload jar files and do the whole InstallTrigger.install thing. This also makes it impossible for users to download the skins and install them later, and has a host of other problems. If we could just put all the skins into XPI files it would be real easy to put them up on all the theme download sites, as well as the P2P programs and such. So the big question is, is it currently possible to correctly install a skin from a XPI file? I can get the skin to install quite easily, but not into the profile directory, and not uninstallable. Everyone I ask about this (except for Doron) responds with "sure it's possible" but can't actually give me the code to do. If this isn't possible, why isn't it (is there a bug?), and if it is possible, could somebody please give me the code to do it. -- Aaron Andersen www.XulPlanet.com
