a feature im even missing in outlook is automated marking of holidays.
real simple calendars include holidays outlook doesnt for some reason.
so it would be a lovely feature if calendar would mark the holidays in the
current year via a country setting.

Severity: normal → enhancement
Confirming enhancement. This would make a good test of the import system (see
requirements doc). For the moment, making this block bug 122649.

OK, this is now supported in CVS, but there's no front end for it.
You can specify the different colors for all the categories by adding a line
like this to your calendar.css file:
*[Holidays="true"]
{
/* put whatever you want in here */
font-weight : bold;
border : 1px solid red !important;
}
You can replace Holidays with whatever category name you want.
I'm going to send this bug to nobody@mozilla.org, someone else can do the
preferences work, which shouldn't be too hard.

Could we have the same sort of UI for the events categories than for the
"labels" in Mozilla Mail then?
How would it work when multiple categories for a single event will be allowed?
Maybe holiday should be a special kind of event?

This is needed functionality. There should be a way to easily see that a day is
a holiday and there needs to be a way to view by not only country but by
location. For example, Boston has an "Evacuation Day" holiday that the rest of
Massachusetts and the US do not have.

I've imported Holiday calendars from the project page. Is this still considered
a bug?

I would also like to hide "[official] holidays" in the event list, as they tend
to fill it up.
Setting a category to "Do not show in event list" and giving it a special color
would be much better.
Holidays via a Country/State setting would also be useful for Germany, but I
don't know if the iCalendar standard supports this fine definition.

As said in comment #6, holiday files for a variety of countries are now
available on the calendar website. Marking fixed.
