Details

From Bugzilla Helper: User-Agent: Mozilla/4.79 [en] (Windows NT 5.0; U) BuildID: 2002051006 Communicator mail used to remember the location of the last read message in each mail folder. This is indespensible when you move between large folders. Currently Mozilla takes you to the top of the message list each time you return to a folder. Depending on how you sort mail this typically means that you have to scroll to the bottom of a large list. It is tempting to hit the 'end' key, but that's a big problem because it marks that last message as read, whether you've read it or not (if the message pain is open that is). Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Read a message, note location in mesage list 2. Move to another folder 3. Return to original folder - previous location is lost 4. Hit 'end' key to go to bottom of list 5. Note that the last message is marked as read if the mail pane is open, but you have no way of knowing if you've really read it before or not - short of trying to remember, which is unreliable and annoying. Actual Results: As described Expected Results: 1. Return to previous location in folder's message list 2. Moving to 'end' of folder marking the message as read is a tricky one. I'm not sure what the best options are for that. Personally I don't really care, because what I really want is to display all of my messages in a reused second window. I think that double clicking a message should display it in a second window and that window should be shared/reused by all mail messages. This is easy to achieve by always launching messages into a window named target=_message or somesuch. This technique can be used to handle other cases where launching a separate window is desired but not every time, eg, from external applications. This bug wouldn't be so bad if it was possible to display messages in a second window (again, like Communicator used to do) but Mozilla makes it virtually impossible to do that.
This is generic (Platform all).
