Ubuntu just released a gnome-shell update that we think fixes the underlying issue here (bug 1451466 which is really https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ibus/+bug/1765304 , for which an update was published earlier today as noted in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ibus/+bug/1765304/comments/64 )
Shian-Yow Wu, would you mind retesting after installing the most recent updates to your Ubuntu packages (and double-checking that you've got gnome-shell version 3.28.3-0ubuntu0.18.04.4 or later)?
For what it's worth, I just tested the steps from comment 0 (on Ubuntu 18.10 which is what I'm running locally now), and I can't reproduce. That's consistent with the theory that this is an instance of what we've investigated in bug 1451466. (because Ubuntu 18.10 was never affected by that bug, since it's got a newer gnome-shell snapshot)

I'll take the liberty of marking this as a duplicate of bug 1451466 (i.e. marking it as the upstream Ubuntu issue), since that seems pretty consistent with the available data, though please reopen if you can still reproduce with gnome-shell version 3.28.3-0ubuntu0.18.04.4 or later.

Just tested 18.04 update and the problem is resolved. Thank you Daniel for coordinating this.

That's great to hear! Sorry that the fix took so long to make it out - I wish we could've done something sooner.
Anyway, thanks for confirming that it's fixed.
