From Bugzilla Helper:
User-Agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; Q312461)
BuildID: 20020520

Downloaded RC2 and attempted to install. The install log shows that it stops
at this point:

    XPInstall Start
        Mozilla XPCOM

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.Download RC2
2.Double click the installer
3.Click next next next all the way through until it begins to install

Actual Results: Began to install and then simply quit. Task manager showed
the installer during the installation and then it just "disappeared" from the
task list.

Expected Results: Installed correctly.

Have you had Mozilla installed before?
If yes: Did you uninstall the older version before installing a new?
Was there an error message associated with the install stopping?

Please attach (as an /attachment/, NOT the way you included install_status.log)
the install_wizard<n>.log from the install.

It's kind of hard to UNinstall something that never installs!
Sorry you were unable to duplicate the error, but the error exists
nonetheless. If Mozilla is to take off you cannot simply dismiss an error
because ONE person cannot duplicate it.

I will scour my registry for Mozilla references and remove every trace of it
from my system and attempt once again to re-install it. Hopefully it will
work after that.

Just attempted to install RC3 with the same results - see attached Install
Wizard Log.

Does 1.0 work for you?
No - 1.0 does not work either. It dies at the exact same point.
describe "dies". Does the installer stops/crash/hangs?

What are your network connection? Firewall?

Please try the following:
remove old mozilla completely (files in mozilla.org directory)
remove any temp files in your TEMP directory
try to install mozilla

report back to this bug...:
If you follow this bug thread you will see what it does. Essentially the
installer creates all of the directories and then simply stops the
installation. The error has occured in the same place with each release -
RC1, RC2, RC3 and 1.0. I have never been able to install Mozilla. I have
always removed it & cleaned my registry before attempting a new install.

stops? Is the progress dialog shown? Does the installer exists? Do you have to
kill it? please provide more info...

Could you attach the screen shot of the installer when it stops or does it
disappaer?

What directories are created?
The install window only pops up for a moment so it would be nearly impossible
to take a screen shot. It dies at "installing XPCOM" and it only creates the
following directory before quitting:

Program Files\mozilla.org\Mozilla\Plugins
Program Files\mozilla.org\Mozilla\uninstall
Program Files\mozilla.org\Mozilla\install_status.log
Program Files\mozilla.org\Mozilla\install_wizard.log

Have you cleaned up the temporary directory listed in the install_status.log
you've attached? I assume you're using the full install version rather than the
small stub since it's trying to use local files, right?
Resolving as we have not had reply from reporter in a month.

I have successfully installed Mozilla 1.1 on two Win XP systems. One with SP1
and one without.

The trick is to put the installer in "Win98/ME compatibility mode". Worked like
a charm and I still have my prefs.

Reopening... Original reporter never said he was using SP1 so it could be a
completely different issue. Although if he had an early SP1 beta maybe that's
the problem.

Paul, if you haven't given up on us, does the problem go away if you set the
executable to Win95 or Win98 compatibility mode? Are you using SP1?
Status: RESOLVED → UNCONFIRMED
Resolution: DUPLICATE → ---
I have verified this bug..... if I install on a fresh copy of Windows XP, all
installers run fine; then I can apply SP1 and everything works; however, if I
install Windows XP, followed by SP1, then Mozilla, I can't get Mozilla to
install. Crashes in same place first poster indicated. Haven't tried
compatibility mode, but that's kind of a lame solution......
Verified that compatibility mode worked.... currently running Windows XP SP1,
and installer would crash. Set compatibility to 98 and it ran fine. Program
works great in native mode once it is installed.
Crashes for me after installing SERVICE PACK 1 on Windows XP Professional Engl.
edition. I tried recent 09-28 full install and net install, both crashes into
microsoft report tool.
