Alex, do we deliberately restrict to numbers from the geolocation of the IP as a UX or security measure? I don't recall the details of why it is this way.

No, we do it because it was the easiest to implement w/o trying to iterate through the list of countries to find a possible match. It was the easiest path forward to getting the feature shipped.

Just encountered this problem myself. While registering I'm only allowed enter a German number. +49 seems to be hardcoded. But I still use the mobile number I've used for 20+ years from another EU country. Roaming is free in the EU.
