It causes obscure stuff like bug 1469076. We should really re-measure and figure out where we are in terms of memory usage and whether this optimization helps to it.

Bobby had some specific measurements in bug 1397976 so if you are re-measuring it would be good to use those. (I'm not sure what's changed in the last 10 months that would make this caching less effective, though.)
