It works fine in Chrome

Hmm, I tried this and it works for me. I wonder if we were being served different content.

(I tried in yesterday's nightly on Windows 10)
The issue is reproducible also on Firefox Beta 62.0b9

Does the contact here mean the left side in https://www.facebook.com/messages? I could reproduce this in https://www.facebook.com/messages, but middle-click the contact in top-right chat icon did open a new tab.

I'm in News feed page and the contact is on the right side(in chat list)

I could reproduce on Nightly and also Firefox 51. Looks like a long existing behavior. Mark as P3, please upgrade to P2 if you have a different opinion.
