Record whether a profile was a stub profile created for downgrades
Bug 1474285 creates stub profile that are only meant to be used by downgrades. We want to record the use of these profiles in telemetry.
P2 for tracking so it shows up in our bug tracking dashboard.

How is a stub profile identified? It might be a good idea for this data to show up in the new-profile ping. If this becomes part of the environment, it will show up without much additional work. https://firefox-source-docs.mozilla.org/toolkit/components/telemetry/telemetry/data/new-profile-ping.html
(In reply to Jan-Erik Rediger [:janerik] from comment #2) > How is a stub profile identified? Currently there is no way to identify it really. I was thinking of adding a specially named empty file to the profile folder. A preference is also doable but a little harder. > It might be a good idea for this data to show up in the new-profile ping. > If this becomes part of the environment, it will show up without much > additional work. Where would you prefer it, in the environment or as a new entry in the new-profile payload?

I leave this to you (I am not familiar with the profile handling code). > Where would you prefer it, in the environment or as a new entry in the > new-profile payload? Putting it in the environment means it's sent with all pings immediately, including the new-profile ping, so that's a good place.

Yes. The "Environment" documentation will be updated to reflect the addition. Is there a control mechanism that allows the user to turn the data collection on and off? Yes. Standard Telemetry mechanisms apply. If the request is for permanent data collection, is there someone who will monitor the data over time? Yes, :shong. Using the category system of data types on the Mozilla wiki, what collection type of data do the requested measurements fall under? ** Category 1, Technical. Is the data collection request for default-on or default-off? Default on. Does the instrumentation include the addition of any new identifiers (whether anonymous or otherwise; e.g., username, random IDs, etc. See the appendix for more details)? No. Is the data collection covered by the existing Firefox privacy notice? Yes. Does there need to be a check-in in the future to determine whether to renew the data? No. The collection is permanent. --- Result: datareview+
