While using the addons manager, the search box acts in a way that is unexpected to me -- when I am searching on this page, I expect that the search searches in the page like in about:preferences
It makes more sense to me that there is a prominent banner or similar that leads a user directly to addons.mozilla.org - there can also be a search box alongside this banner, but ideally one that makes it obvious (via association with branding like on addons.mozilla.org that it searches the repository on addons.mozilla.org, and not in about:addons.
Right now, the search guides a user into a flow that is inconsistent with other about: pages.
It might even make more sense to embed the addon category picker from addons.mozilla.org (screenshot attached) alongside a search box to make this even more obvious that these are *links* that open up addons.mozilla.org

The label for this search box is "Find more extensions" and the placeholder is "Search addons.mozilla.org".
Making larger changes to the current UI will likely have more drawbacks that it will improve things. We're currently in the process of a larger redesign of about:addons as we bring it up to date with other parts of the code base and how we integrate with AMO will be considered there.
