Seeing Firefox freeze in the last few builds shortly after startup. This does not occur in a fresh profile, but persists after profile refresh. 

This also seems to migrate across profiles via Firefox Sync to other profiles.

I can't reproduce this bug on an Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS with either a local build or binary from nightly.mozilla.org.
Although I am trying this out by testing adding/removing credit cards on a new profile, which is not something you'd described.

So by "freeze", did Firefox become unusable to you, or it had just frozen for a few seconds?

I would assume the more accurate way to reproduce this bug would be

1) download a Nightly before bug 1486954 and add some credit card records
2) upgrades to the current Nightly
3) try to trigger credit card records update by opening up the credit card management dialog

?

I can do that later sometimes.

I loaded the freezing profile just now and checked about:preferences to see if I had any saved credit cards. As far as I was able to see, the credit card dialog was empty, so I don't think I have any saved credit cards. It is possible I had some in the past and removed them -- I don't know. 

When Firefox freezes here, it is frozen -- not for a few seconds, but for good. Browser UI nor content responds to mouse clicks or keyboard shortcuts. I am using the binaries from nightly.mozilla.org FWIW. 

Happy to do additional troubleshooting steps, but as I mentioned in comment 0, this issue appears in safe mode and persists after a profile refresh, and freezes within 20-30 (maximum) of Firefox launching with the offending profile. 

I took the hint and set up a new Firefox profile (restoring my sessionstore file) without using Firefox Sync with the latest nightly with no issue. 

Where are credit cards stored in the profile? Perhaps I can delete the file to see if the issue persists.

It is stored in ./autofill-profiles.json. You may try to delete it so it would not trigger a freeze.

Do you have master password set? In bug 1486954 we explicitly decided to drop credit card records for nightly users if the master password is set. That would explain why no credit cards were saved in the management dialog.

The crash is very useful. Looking at is I can see it happens when OSKeyStore::GetIsNSSKeyStore(bool*) calls into libpthread.

Franziskus, you might have better luck reproduce this error than I do. Let me know if you can already see the cause.

I deleted the file (and backed it up just in case we need to trigger the bug again) and Firefox no longer freezes for me shortly after startup.

I don't, and while I have in the past, I don't know that I have in this profile (given profile refreshes). 

For what it is worth, I opened autofill-profiles.json in a text editor, and there is definitely (encrypted) credit card records in there, even though they don't show up in the management dialog in the browser. I haven't modified this file or even opened it previously (in case it somehow got corrupted via locking issues or something).

My one theory is that the hang is from Sync repeatedly trying to encrypt or decrypt a record. From the about:support data it looks like Sync was setup

Hmm… that's unfortunate… Tim is making a build of Firefox for you to test that pref in combination with a code change.

Can you add the following to your prefs.js file and then start Firefox from the command line so we can see the console output: user_pref("extensions.formautofill.loglevel, "Debug");

Would it be helpful if OSKeyStore.jsm never attempt to read isNSSKeyStore if a promise from other async functions is pending? OSKeyStore.jsm can simply cache the value on startup I guess...

The original threading model of OSKeyStore could lead to a deadlock if an
asynchronous event were dispatched and then the isNSSKeyStore attribute were
queried. This patch removes that pitfall by moving the determination of the
attribute to OSKeyStore rather than the underlying implementation.

Additionally, the original threading model was inefficient in that it created
and destroyed a thread per asynchronous operation. This patch reworks this to
only ever create one worker thread.
