Steps to reproduce:

Using Macbook Pro (15-inch, touchbar, 2018)
Firefox Version 63.0.3 (64-bit)

This issue is different than Bug 401380
Difference: Files intended to drop into folders are placed in desired folder.

Drag any kind of files (Image, link, etc.) to desktop. 


Actual results:

File does not land on cursor location, and instead sorts itself in columns on the right of the desktop.


Expected results:

File should have dropped in location.
This is exactly bug 401380
The reporter from that report had also the symptoms that the folder icon moved the position when you dropped an image into that folder.
That can be now different with newer OS X versions but the basic problem is the same as your problem.
