Right click the task area of the today pane and check the settings for task filtering. If it is set to e.g. 'Tasks in the next 7 days' than it will not show tasks that start and end outside this time frame.

This worked. However, before I selected it, none of the options under "Filter Tasks" were selected. I figured, it behaved like "Current Tasks" or "Today" (not sure).
I was going to point out that it is not very intuitive to only hide those tasks which have a start AND due date but indeed showing those which have only a due date when they are out of the regarded time range. But even though this reduced usability for me at first, it is probably the best in aspects of utility for users who know about this behavior. Should this bug report be closed? Maybe the user interface or the help pages should make a statement?

Tasks that start and end in the future are not relevant today. And by default the today pane will only you show content that is relevant for you today. You can use the task tab to better manage all tasks.

This makes perfect sense when I think about it. Requiring the user to think about the interface should not be its goal, but nevertheless, it is at least my fault if I don't.
