Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; WOW64; rv:56.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/56.0

Steps to reproduce:

We got the feature to discard tabs and save cpu/ram/energy but we got no option to use this great feature.

A simple option in about:preferences#general under Performance to activate and use the discard feature would be awesome. This option should not affect pinned tabs.

[X] Activate automatic discard of inactive Tabs after [30] Minutes and after [10] Minutes if a battery is used. This decreases waste of Performance and Energy.

This option should not affect tabs with filled forms. This could result in bad UX. (Write a long text - going for a break - all discarded/deleted)

Media/Notification tabs are pin-able and dont need to be whitelisted. User which prefer a fully customizeable discard feature can go for an extra addon. But the basic feature should be a part of the performance options.

Blocks: lazytabs

I don't see what loaded tabs have to do with energy.. or even performance.
Their only burden (except for some *very* limited cases of poorly designed websites, imo) is the occupied memory.

Automatic discarding just before "paging hard" (however it could be measured), kind of android like, might be a sensible option for many users.
But I believe discarding is such a complex choice matter that it'd be better left tinkerable by some specific add-on.
