I'm using Mozilla 1.1a build 2002061408 on Mac OS X 10.1.5. When I download any files (I've tested it with many MP3 files) that have long names, the file names are truncated, like this: I name the file: Fluid in Motion - TransAtlantic.mp3 It truncates it to: Fluid in Motion…ansAtlantic.mp3 This has happened to every file with a long name that I have tried.
Chris, please provide the URL of the file you're downloading that exhibits this problem.
This happens on any file with a long file name, so I can't really give you any specifics. Anyway, it mainly happens on files that I rename to more desriptive titles--mostly MP3's.
Chris, you do realize that the Finder displays long filenames that way, right? That if you click on the file in column view you can see the whole filename? Is that what you're reporting here?
That's not what I'm saying. When I go to rename the file in the Finder, it still shows the elipsis in the text field. Go test it! Download some file, and give it the name "This is a really cool file that I downloaded at this site today!" or something else that's really long. You'll see that the file has been _renamed_ with much of the text cut out, and an elipsis in the middle of it all.
You said if I click on the file in column view you'll see the whole file name. When the name column is twice the width of the file, and it still has the elipsis, and when I try to rename it, it still has the elipsis, and when the tooltip shows the elipsis in the file name, and the "Name and Extension" info pane still shows the elipsis, and the Terminal still shows the elipsis when using 'ls', I'm not sure how I could be any more clear that the file has been renamed with the elipsis and many words missing.
Okay, just making sure.
This is not a bug. This is a feature. File names which are longer then the character limit on Mac are truncated. This "bug" is the result of an intentional change made by Steve Dagley to prevent the silent failure for files with names too long for Mac. If you disagree with the feature then post to the newsgroups and try to convince the developers that implemented this to change it. Thanks.

This is just one of the restrictions imposed by the HFS APIs. There's a bug assigned to ccarlen for rewriting nsLocalFileMac to utilize the HFS+ APIs which will allow us to support long file names.
