Mozilla 1.0 on Mac OS X exhibits extremely poor performance when connecting to a secure server. Pages that load nearly instantly with Internet Explorer take an unacceptably long amount of time to load in Mozilla 1.0. The problem appears to be related to image loading. Text-only pages appear to be unaffected. This behavior wasn't evident in earlier versions of Mozilla. The image referenced by the URL above takes 30 seconds to load on a dual-1GHz processor G4 running Mozilla 1.0 over a 100-megabit connection. The same image loads over SSL in well under 1 second using Mozilla 1.0 on a 500MHz Pentium II running Windows NT 4.0. Loading the same image from a non-SSL server (http://aerocompass.larc.nasa.gov/images/compass.jpg) takes well under 1 second on the same dual-processor G4.
