User Story

When enabling RDM,
I want it to remember the I prefer side-docked devtools (as it works well with vertical layout,
so that I don't need to manually toggle the docking mode.

Potential solutions:

  • Checkbox in RDM settings panel to remember currently set docking position (if set right or left)
  • Potentially enable by default and make users aware of how to disable it when applying it the first time

What do people think should happen if you have devtools open first, docked at the bottom, and only then turn RDM on?
Should devtools then auto-dock to the side because this is how you happened to have it the last time?

I also use RDM mostly with side-docked devtools by the way, so I can see how something like this would be helpful, but we need to think of all the possibilities here.

I've been mulling over this one for a long time, as I just wasn't sure if this bottom-default, side-RDM scenario is common enough to warrant RDM auto-docking. I was trying to figure out how to write a Twitter poll for this. But, regardless, it does seem like a nice refinement to have a setting for this, if it's not too much work to implement.

I hesitate at this idea only because vertical DevTools seems like a poor experience right now, and I don't really want to push it on folks :/.

I agree with :victoria. The inspector docked to right does not have the same great experience as docked to bottom, esp. with the missing 3-pane fixes. I would prefer not to push this on users just yet.

The setting however seems like a nice improvement.
