Emanuela from UX suggests 1/2 of the full width of the monitor. For videos that are taller than they are wide, we're okay with having the screen height be the maximum height (unless, by preserving the aspect ratio, the width of the video reaches 1/2 of the screen width, in which case, we stop there).

Why stop at half width? I have an ultra wide monitor, so there is rarely anything that really occupies my screen width. Having a full HD video at full height (1440px) still leaves me a horizontal space of over 800 pixels which is plenty to have something else on the side of the video. I could actually see myself doing this in the future; especially since I usually avoid fullscreen modes and websites tend to scale videos very badly when you resize the window to fill your monitor.
I’d suggest to just enforce that the video can have a max width and height of your screen.

I'm actually not sure we need a restriction at all. We clamp down on how big the initial display can be so as to not overwhelm the user initially, but once the user has control of the size of the window, I don't see why it has to be limited.
What do you think, astevenson? Should I close this as WONTFIX?

Yes, I think that makes sense. We can revisit if this becomes an issue in the future.
