If the PC accidentially hangs or crashes (caused by another application) while
Mozilla Mail is running, the next time Mozilla Mail is started after rebooting
all stored mails are marked as unread *OR* after connection to POP3 server all
mails are downloaded again, even if they have been read already.
This effect is sporadic, but happened three times within one week of permanent use.
Mozilla build 2002053012.

Yes that can happen because the .msg files are open and they can get damaged if
the PC crashes.
I saw this 2x in 2 years and I had many crashes (BSOD) because of a bad RAM Module.
But what should we do in this case ?

I have never seen this problem with Outlook(/Express), so there should be a way
of protecting the data in .msg files unless the PC crashes during a physical
write-to-disk process. A BSOD during a read access to a file shouldn't crash it.

I have also noticed this happening recently with Mozilla 1.4 on WinXP. It seems
to be related to receiving a spam message that shows up with a date of 11/5/2007
5:20 AM. Every time I receive this message, the inbox will hang and then all of
the messages are marked as unread and sorted incorrectly. The actual Date header
of the message is Date: Sat, 15 Jun 0102 11:44:44 -0400
I can post the complete headers if necessary. I always have this email every
time this happens.

This is the complete email that I receive when all of my inbox messages are
marked as unread.

clicking on this message doesn't cause any problems, so it must be the actual
downloading of it from the pop3 server. perhaps it's the date. I'll try to
convince my pop3 server to take this message.

I could not reproduce this problem. Please try 1.5 b, and compact your inbox to
make sure the x-mozilla-status headers are added. Thx.
the redownloading of all mail has to do with popstate.dat not getting updated
before the crash

Unable to reproduce with POP3 account after several induced crahes. Tested win
