Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; Win64; x64; rv:66.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/66.0

Steps to reproduce:

Steps to reproduce is upgrade Android, ensure wireless is enabled, and stream any video in Firefox, the crackling in audio occurs, regardless of headphones or built in speaker.

Details;
Since upgrading from Android 8 to ver. 9 (security patch level March 1 2019), my Firefox videos now have audio issues and make crackling noise. Issue occurs on any video I play in Firefox and I confirmed it occurs on YouTube, Vimeo, and any other video hosting website. Issue does not occur with Chrome.

I have; Rebooted my phone, cleared cache, deleted Firefox data, and even re-installed Firefox from scratch. Issue still occurring. I have had this phone, with Firefox, for over a year with no issues and last night's Android update has triggered this problem.

Device details: -Samsung Galaxy S8 (SM-G950W) -Android version 9 (kernel ver. 4.4.153-15485298) -Software update version: G950WVLU5CSC1/G950WOYA5CSC1/G950WVLU5CSC1 -Firefox version 66.0.2

note: issue happens with any headphones or built-in speaker (when playing video in FF).

Tested VLC player and Netflix app and confirmed audio problem does not occur.

Factory reset my phone, issue still occurring
Firefox 67 (beta) and 68.x (nightly) both have the same issue.
***Issue only occurs when streaming on WiFi

Actual results:

crackle noise in audio when playing video

Expected results:

expected Firefox to perform as it did (no audio issues) on Android version 8.

I cannot reproduce it in my device, which is a different one but in the same patch level. Jhon, can you please try to reproduce it?

No, I cannot reproduce it on 2 devices that I have (a Pixel 2 with Android 9 + security patch Feb 5, 2019 and a Pixel 3 with Android 9 + security patch Dec 5, 2018) either.

Hello Ryan,
I tried to reproduce your issue using all your information but I wasn't able.
Additional from Youtube and vimeo.com pages, I tried with Twitch, Europa FM and RadioZU. I tested those scenarios using Samsung Headset and the speaker of the devices in test on a Wi-Fi connection.
Builds:

  • Release 67.0;
  • Nightly 68.0a1 (2019-05-17).

Devices:

  • Samsung Galaxy Note 8 (Android 9) - Security patch from April 1st, 2019;
  • Samsung Galaxy S8 (Android 9) - Security patch from February 1st, 2019;
  • Google Pixel 9 (Android 9) - Security patch from May 5th, 2019;

Can you try with the latest version of Nightly and come with your updates?

Sorry for the delay in reply (email notification was in spam folder). I just tried the latest version of Nightly (68.0a1) and appears the issue no longer occurs on this Firefox version. When back to my 67.0, and within first 30 seconds of a video can hear the crackle / tick noise. Just to be sure, I tested about 6 different videos and cannot hear any noticeable crackle using the nightly.

This is great news! :)

Please let me know if I can provide any additional info to help. I will continue to monitor, and also stop using Chrome and just use nightly ver. for my videos. ;)

I should note, my S8 is now on Android build # PPR1.180610.011.G950WVLU5CSD5 with security patch level "April 1, 2019".

My test today, on June 5th with Nightly 68.0a1 (2019-06-05) was successful as audio was clean/clear when playing any video (over WiFi).

Also, confirmed that problem does NOT manifest when using Beta 68.0b7

Due to the reporter's updates, I'll close this issue as Worksforme, thanks.
