Since Thunderbird 67 Beta1, Thunderbird is very slow, not matter if I'm using NVDA or JAWS. So I think, it is a general issue.

Following things are very sow:

  • Navigate trough message list
  • Reading a message with the arrow keys
  • Composing a message
  • Thunderbird in general

I'm using the x64 Version of Thunderbird, but a user told me that he can confirm it with x86 too. My Account Type is IMAP with lot of mails in it. In my work place, wich I'm using Thunderbird 60.7, I cannot reproduce it.

What version of Windows, JAWS, NVDA?

What version of Windows, JAWS, NVDA?

I'm using JAWS Version 2019.1906.10 and the latest NVDA 2019.2 Beta release. But as I said, I think that I don't think that has something todo with the Screen Reader, because it is slow with all screen readers.

What version of Windows?

What version of Windows?

Very sorry. I'm using Windows Version 1903 (Build 18362.239).

But it seams that this problem is solved. After a while thunderbird runs fine for me. During sync with IMAP server, it got very very slow.

Reporter, Approximately how many emails is "lots of emails"? Also, how many folders?
Also, FYI, I am changing this to "Normal" from "Major" since "Major" classification is going away soon.

Severity: major → normal

Reporter, Approximately how many emails is "lots of emails"? Also, how many folders?

Currently there are 223043 emails and 10 folders in my mailbox

So that averages out to about 22304 emails in each folder? As a test you might try to enable the CONDSTORE imap feature using config editor:
mail.server.default.use_condstore (set to true)
Then restart tb. The slowdown is probably because so many flags are fetched at startup since your folders have so many messages. If you are typically selected on INBOX, the number of messages there will be the main cause since other folder's flags are not fetched until you click on them. Note that condstore was at one time enabled by default but can cause some problems. See this bug for details: Bug 912216

I don't know why, but Thunderbird is runign as normal. Without the settings you said. Perhaps it was until TB indexes all mails in IMAP, but a Mail program souldn't be so slow during synch mails. I'M using GMX as a mail provider.

Can you shutdown and start tb and it runs OK now?

Did the slowdown occur the very first time you connected and set up your accounts? If so, and assuming you are using the default tb offline storage, all your many emails and attachments have to download and be stored in files. You should see activity indications in the status bar along the bottom. Once this is done, on subsequent restarts you should only have to fetch flags for each message and download headers and message bodies for new emails. The CONDSTORE that I suggested only affects download of message flags which are not nearly as much as headers and email bodies and attachments but occurs once for each selected folder after startup.
