When accepting an event, some random calendar is selected in the "which calendar do you want to store this" panel (TB 68)

I have four calendars. When I accept an event, the 3rd calendar is preselected in the panel. Not a big issue, I can just click the one I want, but I wonder why it's selecting a calendar which is towards the end of the list. Shouln't it select the last one used?

Is it not the currently selected calendar (on the calendar or tasks tab, under the mini-month)?

Uff, you mean the selection the list of calendars defines a "currently selected calendar", good heavens :-(
