User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:67.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/67.0

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Use Ubuntu 19.04 (or any Linux distro)
  2. Install Firefox
  3. Open any site, white page is there.
  4. Open a new tab, white flash is there.

Even if u install, the extension to bypass this, it takes split 2 sec for the browser to give the extension that right (unless it chrome, which take 0 sec).

Actual results:

I have proof this, by the screencast video attachment down below.

Expected results:

As in the video, which clearly shows how slow is Firefox and its responses.
Because of this, extensions response are slow.

Leave alone the page/video loading...

Summary: Never ending topic, how slow are Firefox responses when compared with Chrome. → Firefox responses when compared with Chrome.

If your desktop theme is dark, Firefox 68 will adopt a dark color for new tabs, so they don't flash white: bug 1488384
Firefox 68 is released today: https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/new/
It's also configurable via pref: On about:config you could create a pref called ui.systemUsesDarkTheme. 0 is light, 1 is dark. But you might not need this.

Regarding performance, you could try out Firefox' new graphics engine:
Download Nightly. Open about:config, set gfx.webrender.all to true and restart Nightly.
If you find issues, please report them and tell that you've enabled WebRender. Thanks ;-)

You might need to set browser.in-content.dark-mode to true, too. See bug 1488384 comment 37.
Please respond whether this fixes the problem for you or not. Thanks!

Tested on ubuntu 18.04 64bit and also in windows10 64bit and MacOS 10.13.6

  • black new tab addon installed
  • firefox dark theme enabled

Nightly version 70.0a1 > when creating a new tab, it flashes white
Beta version 69.0b4 > when creating a new tab, it flashes white
Release version 68 > when creating a new tab, it flashes white

with some of the settingss provided to help avoid issue in about:config, i was able to fix white flash but it flashed grey. So its not full fix.

This issue could be duplicate of bugs:

https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1408122
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1510567

But im not sure if its different, since on this one there is an addon installed for the issue to appear.
