Details

There should be a way for web extensions to programmatically open the urlbar's popup panel. We could modify the existing browser.urlbar.openViewOnFocus property or add a new function (e.g. browser.urlbar.openView()).

One potential use case would be for the search tips web extension to be able to display a contextual tip in the popup panel and have it appear without the user needing to click in the urlbar's input field.
