If we're not already able to do this, it would be beneficial to know how much time users spend on the first stage of about:welcome (just the modal).

Is this something we can already find out?

No, the current telemetry can't answer this.

A session ping could be added to track the modal duration for about:welcome. Now that bug 1569598 has been implemented by bug 1568909. I think we can take a crack at this one as it helps us to better understand the user engagement.
