1577174 - authentication_dialog_abuse_limit can cause the browser to freeze/crash

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:68.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/68.0

Steps to reproduce:

Cancel 3 times the authentication dialog box.
Or click 3 times 'OK' at the authentication dialog box without any user/password.

=> 3 times because 'prompts.authentication_dialog_abuse_limit' is set to '2' by default.

Actual results:

• Firefox doesn't show the authentication dialog box any more until you close the tab or/and create a new one.
• sometimes Firefox crashes/freeze its windows/is unresponsive to user actions => kill it!

Expected results:

1. Don't crash.
2. Show a warning that 'prompts.authentication_dialog_abuse_limit' is reached.
3. Set 'prompts.authentication_dialog_abuse_limit' to '-1' (no limit) as default.

Hello,
Can we please have the exact repro steps for this issue? Also if possible the exact site where you tried it?
Can you please re-test it while in Safe Mode ? You can find helpful info here : https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode .
Also can you re-test while using a new profile? You can find more about creating a new profile here : https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-and-diagnose-firefox-problems#w_6-create-a-new-firefox-profile .
If possible, you can test this issue on the nightly build as well. Download the build from : https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/nightly/all/ .

Thank for the reply, I believe this looks like an enhancement and i have set it accordingly.
I will set a component so that the DEV team will be involved and they can explain this better than me, however if you feel like it's not the correct one please feel free to change it.

We aren't going to change that

• sometimes Firefox crashes/freeze its windows/is unresponsive to user actions => kill it!

So we can focus on this.

P3 for now unless Johann/pbz disagree as I haven't seen other reports in this compoent.

I can't reproduce the crash/hang on the site you provided. Not really actionable for me at the moment and I don't understand why we would crash or hang at all.
