it was made like that to avoid being distracting, and it's usually really hard to predict download progress, since it's depending on so many factors.
I agree we could revise it one day, though it's something that should start from a UX analysis and proposal...
I though this was a duplicate but couldn't find an open bug about this, so confirming for now.
