i guess i'd prefer something other than the lightswitch icon for the Appearance icon. :)

I've made a new design for the Preferences dialogs, with the help/remarks of Chimera board members. If you want, as they seem to be well received on Chimera Board, at least better than by the developers themselves, don't hesitate to ask me. They are free of copyright, I made them myself. http://www.stocksraiders.com/chimera/
Stephane, this bug is about changing the icon. Your mockups don't appear to have any icons.
Check the Latest Version section, only the Preferences link has all of them. http://www.stocksraiders.com/chimera/PrefWithIcons06.jpg
I've modified the main page, the icons can be downloaded. http://www.stocksraiders.com/chimera/
I don't know if I'm entirely enthusiastic about those, with all due respect. While Chimera's graphics thus far all have a unified and cohesive appearance, those seem kind of all-over-the-place to me. (A coffee mill for Scripts and Plug-Ins? I guess that makes sense for Java, but not much else. And what does the heart signify on Languages? I don't understand that.)
Greg: Heart is favorite languages order to display a page content, like the heart in the Finder toolbar. Script, I've tryed to make an AppleScript icon (S) with a coffee bean or a sprocket but the icons are too small, they appear like a dot... For the all-over-the-place, I think we should have : - preferences icons very colorful, like in Finder, Mail, etc. - browser toolbar (go back, forward, etc) very light, like those used now in Chimera, to avoid disturbing the browsing/reading as pages are more and more overloaded. From the feedback received, most like them different (colorful), some (1+you) prefer them unified (all blue)... Always the same, no one can please everyone. Anyway, we can customize them with ChimerIcon, etc. And I'll not spend more time on this as the developers don't seem to be interested by what we (ChimeraBoard) have done until now, layouts or icons. I'll wait a direct request/demand to enhance or modify them or to try other ideas/designs.
A poll "Icons unified or colorful?" has been opened, all details on first post. http://www.eternaltedium.com/cgi-bin/chimeraboard/ikonboard.cgi?s=3d46923c62b4ffff;act=ST;f=1;t=73
actually, what i was originally looking for was a replacement icon for the main Appearance category itself. (although these other suggestions for the sub-categories look nifty. :) i had a thought for Appearance: how about the mozilla mascot observing himself in a mirror?
Stephane: we appreciate the efforts you've put into designing the prefs panels, and icons for them. However, we need to maintain an overall aethetic theme in Chimera, and, currently, that has to match the blue icon theme of the toolbars and splash screen. Unfortunately your icons look rather colourfull and jarring next to the rest of the icons in the application.

My suggestion for the Appearance prefpane icon.
lauri, that looks good, thanks! it seems a bit small for my eyes, however --then again, i'm not sure what the appropriate icon size should be for pref icons... (again, i do like the image you produced.)
The maximum size is 32x32, I used 30x30 (the same size as the light switch icon that's now in place in the prefs).

what does an eye have to do with appearance? maybe i'm missing something? ;)
...appearance settings affect how the user *sees* webpages... :)

Attachment #93562 - Flags: needs-work+
Adjusted the blue of the eye to better match Chimera's blue theme, thus making the previous icon attachment obsolete.
a tiff from ugo santana, more along the lines of what i was thinking. objections?
